The extra length allows a more vertical line angle which means less current drag and better feel. Winter fish are not as aggressive as their summer-run cousins, but they are heavier and use the swifter water to their advantage. That' s where this rod really shines. It will handle Chinook salmon and all the smaller salmon as well - a really good all around drift rod.

G. loomis salmon rods are designed for a special technique called mooching. This style of fishing is done from a boat by slowly trolling or drifting with the wind or tide. Both methods are effective, but each requires a rod that will allow the fish to chew on the bait and pull it down without much resistance. That's why our salmon rods reature a soft, moderate action. It lets the rod bend easily when the fish first hits the bait so he'll hang on a little longer (at which point, you set the hook and hang on a lot longer). The tip still has that backbounce action but can handle weights in the 1 to 3 ounce range. Dropping a bait rig to the bottom and slowly feeding line out as you bounce it back toward the fish in the middle of their holding water forces them to react and that' s why bacbouncing is so effective. Backbouncing is a SPECIAl TECHNIQUE used primarily by Northwest steelhead and salmon anglers. To fish a pool or run, heavy lead is used to put your bait right on the bottom and, with the help of the current, literally bounce your bait downstream, keeping it right in the fish's face. Consequently, the rod you choose depends on the power necessary to lift the weight off the BOTTOM and still have sufficient power to set the hook with authority. A heavy-duty rod with a stiff tip is crucial, because many times the fish are smack dab in the heaviest current and you need a lot of lead. (Not to mention the fact that KING SAlMON can weigh in excess of 90 pounds.)

A stout, 8-foot version of our original backbouncing rod, designed mainly to fish for steelhead and salmon on larger rivers with heavy current. The extra length makes it a good choice for deep-water runs and pools where extra weight is needed and line control is more of an issue.
